Waterkant featured: Prestigious Latin dance festival ‘Salsuri’ returns after 11 years

The largest Surinamese Latin dance festival ‘Salsuri’ returns after 11 years. International dance champions, renowned dance instructors and top DJs prepare for an unforgettable show and dance spectacle during the International Salsa & Bachata festival in Paramaribo, from October 24 to 27, 2024 in the Assuria Event Center and the Royal Breeze hotel.

This will be the tenth edition of Salsuri. “In Suriname, bigi yari is celebrated in a big way. So the tenth festival will be a colorful experience of Latin music, dance and culture,” says Salsuri founder and organizer Mequillo Pang Atjok.

The festival consists of two show evenings on October 24 and 25, 2024 in the Assuria Event Center. The workshops and bootcamps will take place on October 26 and 27, 2024 in the River Breeze hotel on the Waterkant. The social evenings (dancing and networking) are from October 24 to 27, 2024, also in River Breeze.

Pang Atjok: “We have a special line-up of famous dance couples and groups from Colombia, England, the United States of America, French Guyana, Curaçao and the Netherlands for our comeback edition. In addition to dance performances, they will also provide workshops in which they will share the tricks of the trade of Latin American music and dance.”

Salsuri is an international event, which is also intended to attract tourists to Suriname. Latin lovers from abroad can experience the festival for a special rate and enjoy the Surinamese culture and nature.

History
In 2005, Salsuri (Salsa Suriname) was organized for the first time with the aim of promoting Latin American performing arts in Suriname, creating a link between Salsa and the tropical rainforest of Suriname.

In successive years the fascinating ‘Octoberfestival’ grew in popularity and number of visitors. The audience was richly treated to tasteful shows with acrobatic world champions from the US, South America, Europe and Asia. Also the festive dance evenings with top Latin DJs, light workshops, professional masterclasses and bootcamps, and the exotic Salsuri river cruise.

The spin-off of the attractive performances in combination with workshops was not long in coming; local dance schools grew and regular dance evenings increased. A vibrant Latin scene arose in the city and district that became known beyond the country’s borders. “Salsuri has proven its strength and success. We are proud to pick up the thread again. The event in Suriname is highly regarded by the artists. They are looking forward to giving top performances here and to transfer their knowledge in a festive way”, says Pang Atjok.

Salsuri was last held in 2013.
